Annual Security Report

The purpose of the Annual Security Report, prepared in compliance with the Clery Act, is to inform UMDNJ's faculty, staff, students, and applicants about criminal activity occurring on campus and on contiguous property.

The nationwide problem of crime points to the importance of having confidence in the safety of one's home and workplace. We are pleased to provide you, via our website, a variety of information about campus security at UMDNJ. We hope it will be helpful and will remind all of us to make use of the considerable resources UMDNJ offers to help keep faculty, staff, students, and patients safe.

You will note that our web page includes a detailed accounting of crime statistics and criminal incidents at UMDNJ. A few points may be useful in helping you understand these statistics. With five campuses throughout New Jersey, a work force of over 15,000, and a student body of nearly 5,000, UMDNJ is a large and complex institution. Unlike most universities, UMDNJ provides primary health care services and clinics dedicated to serving the public. Every year, there are over 2,000,000 patient visits to UMDNJ health care facilities. We must protect and service not only faculty, staff, and students, but also the expanded population of patients and visitors.

We hope these facts will help you understand why it is difficult to make useful comparisons of statistics between vastly different institutions - be they college campuses or medical centers. Please be assured that we take the issue of campus safety extremely seriously, and that Public Safety is determined to continue our efforts to ensure that our campuses remain safe. Of course, safety on campus requires not just the efforts of Public Safety personnel, but also the cooperation and understanding of every member of the UMDNJ community. Please do your part to protect yourself and others.
