About Us

Mission Statement

The mission of the Department of Public Safety is to organize, manage, and implement a comprehensive safety and security program for the University designed to protect life and property by preventing, detecting, and controlling unsafe or illegal conditions. Public Safety accomplishes its mission as a service oriented organization dedicated to the principles of quality service and performance excellence.

Functions

Police Officers

University Police Officers receive police academy training and have full police authority throughout the state. They patrol our campuses in marked police vehicles, bike and on foot patrols, and respond quickly to crimes in progress, emergencies, motor vehicle accidents and requests for service.

Security Officers

Security Officers are trained to observe and report suspicious activity and to provide information and assistance to the University Community. They patrol buildings, prevent unauthorized entry into University facilities, and enforce University ID and Property Removal policies.

Central Communications

On every campus, the Central Communications Office is Public Safety's nerve center. Communications personnel communicate with federal, state, county and municipal agencies, fire departments, and emergency medical services, dispatch personnel as needed, operate computerized security equipment, answer telephones and document Public Safety activities.

Detectives

Detectives are specially trained University Police Officers. Detectives perform criminal investigations on all UMDNJ campuses, compile crime statistics, keep records, provide copies of police reports to victims of crimes and motor vehicle accidents, and fingerprint University faculty and students for licensing purposes.

Internal Affairs

All Public Safety personnel are held to the highest standards of professional conduct and are expected to respect the rights of all persons. It is the policy of Public Safety to accept and investigate every allegation of misconduct against any member of the Department. Following a thorough and impartial investigation, any substantiated complaint results in corrective action.
